On Page Factors

What are on page factors?

When researching optimization techniques and affiliate websites you will come across the term 'on page factors' the term means 'the things that you can do in the content of the page to increase you search engine placement'. Ranking is based on several factors, on page factors and off page factors. On page factors include the following:

Title - the title of the web page used by ALL searchengines for ranking

Keywords - the keywords metatag used by some search engines for ranking

Description - the description metatag used by some search engines for ranking

Keyword Density

Title tags (H1, H2 etc)

Bold and italics, colors etc.

Content

It a fairly common assumption that if the web page is built to be easy to read by the visitor then it should be good for the search engines. In part this is true, but there are some big mistakes that affiliates can make, and opportunities that can be missed. Due to tightening of the algorithms by the major SE's, you now have to be very careful about what on page factors you use, and how many times you use them to be sure you won't incur a penalty. Over use of keywords or H1 and H2 tags are possible ways to be penalised by google, always use them sparingly. Don't push your luck as it is a lot harder to get away from a penalty than you think. Forums are full of poeple who's websites have been penalised and are struggling to get them back to a good position. The search engines themselves definately won't help you. A standard reply is usually along the lines of 'we suggest you read our webmaster guidelines' and they will rarely (if ever) admit that you have a penalty. Believe me, I know!
